Its amazing to re-look into the past to understand dynamics of groupism in class. I remember barely within a few days of the start of the college “birds of the same feather flocked together”.
After rounds of intense refining and filtering, the great divide which was apparent became evident. The class was now either The Left or the Right or The centre. Wow!! This started to get interesting. Seats were reserved without any intimation. Specific places were meant for specific people or at least specific groups on a broader scale. If I ever dared to sit on “The Left” side of the class, I was to be prepared to confront the what-the-f***-is he-doing here stares and often giggles at my odd disposition. We were a stronger divide than India-Pak or Israel-Palestine. Similarly if someone from The Left were to try experiencing how it felt to be on “the other side of the world” (I have heard rumours that we were addressed this way!!! Funny!!) they had to go through the gruelling scrutiny .
Even more interesting were the sub divisions under these three categories.I don’t even know if even phone numbers were exchanged in between two groups. When I first came to class , I thought I would make friends with everyone but I was as much a victim of this divide as I was a part of it. We all contributed to it and we all suffered from it.
This was a rule now. Lunch box too would never dare trespass the borders !!
The centre was always an amiable lot. Wonderful people (not to say that the others were not) made it their territory. I remember fond interactions with Jayshree, Rajatha ,Sarika, Sitara, Deepa, Bhoomika and most of the rest. And ofcourse there was the “Back” gang with Bhavya, maddy, madri, prajwal, dark lord and everyone else.
Doesn’t it seem funny now how funny we used to be?
But The Friday (I love to call the last day in a rather filmy way) defied all conventions and broke all rules. I recollect with great joy clicking pictures hands-on-shoulder with Maheshwari , Jyothi, Shraddha nad many others. Believe me it felt wonderful.
Probably for the first time in 3 years I shook hands with Srishti,Eishita,Ankita,Minal,Neha and many more. I felt ecstatic !! I still regret – how-i-wish things had been this way from Day1. What if we never bothered to draw lines and separate ourselves into stupid groups. What if we all felt the same way as we did on The Friday right from the first day. How would have been the life in college if ,when entering the class, we had the freedom of choosing which corner of the class to sit in!!
But leave aside regrets. Aim sure all of us are extremely happy that things ended on rather beautiful and sweet note which was not expected. Hugs went all around the class and photographs saw a healthy fusion of The Left , The Right,The Centre and The Back!!!!
This post is to recollect any memories of incidents/events/people/teachers who made this divide evident. The intention is to understand where it all started. How did you go on to belong to where you did in the class. Any funny rumours regarding class polarization politics or any other thing which you feel worth sharing.
Please note that your comment must never offend anyone. As I always say . It must all be in Good Humour .
PS : All of you who thought I never knew names of most of the people. Look here how many of them I know. I love them all .We all love eachother !!! :o)

THe Great Divide. its a great name for the condition that existed in class.
ReplyDeleteit may seem funny and probably crazy if i say dat mr. Chirag P Jain of the future CHIAK Inc. is siphoning off ideas from my brain, but i'll still say it.
but what chirag failed to mention was dat the breaking of all Divides is a certainity.
The Prision Of Bastille was broken, the berlin wall was broken and well most recently "The Great Divide Of B.G.B2009.
think not dat its of any less significance dan others. This Day i.e. Friday the 17th,April,2009,our last day in college, too shall be remembered throught our lifetime.
im a sucker for dramatization as most of u will know so in keeping up with the legend i name this day as"UNIFICATION B.G.B"
Let us not through away dis advantage which has finally come 2 us.
coming 2 politics, what can i say but:"its in all our blood" in a way it brought us all together.
we all had our share of fights n watched em as well(or atleast most of u did , i miss all d action) and in a way we did take sides bringing us close to 1 of the 2 warriors(plz excuse d word). and so it continude over the zippy 3 yearsbut on UNIFICATION B.G.B day, we all....well atleast i realised datno matter whose side i took in the fight i still cried on parting with the other person.
id say the only thing that came late 2 us was REALISATION
I don't think its any specific incident or anything that caused this rift between us. it was more about where people could share their feelings more freely.
ReplyDeleteBut there were always people from the left side that we spoke to and do have memories with for example bhoomika(chintu as we called her), deepa, sadia etc. and when i mention these people i do so to thank them for being the bridges across the borders and making sure we were always kept upto date with the news from that Left side .
But in these last few days even the lunch boxes started to trespass the borders and you have to agree when it came to mass bunks we some how found a way around these borders. I am sure you remember the no. of bio chem labs we have mass bunked this last semester without any conflicts. The last day akshatha and srishti came and said bye and thats when i realised no matter which group we belonged to ON A BROADER SPECTRUM WE BELONGED TO ONE CLASS CALLED BGB 06-09
its always realisation that comes late and then you fell like you want turn the time back so you could live that moment of life again but you cannot do that as you are no HIRO NAKAMURA . so just live it in the memories
ReplyDeleteBut according to me everything that becomes a memory was meant to occur in that way.
Take the great divide for if example- if it had'nt occured the would be no UNIFICATION DAY and no one would have been talking about this. well we talk about it and have it in our memories only because it happened this way. so have no sorrows that it happened this way
Woh kehte hain na " JO HOTA HAIN ACHE KE LIYE HOTA HAIN" SACH KEHTE HAIN and i have realised it now
@ Akshat Awasthi
DUDE YOU HARDLY ATTENDED CLASSES THEN HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO SEE ALL THE FIGHTS ? WELL YOUR FAULT YOU MISSED IT BUT DON"T WORRY THOSE WHO SAW IT OR WERE DIRECTLY INVOLVED WILL GIVE YOU FULL BLOWN WRITTEN ACCOUNTS ABOUT THE FIGHTS AND THEN YOU CAN RE-LIVE THEM IN YOUR IMAGINATIONS ........ WAT SAY ?
We were supposed to be oblivious to the Great Divide . Everyone knew it existed but no-one wished to acknowledge. Rumour-mills never stopped spinning in all the sides of class !! It was very interesting to be amidst all this fun. I remember having eard amazin stories about me too!!
ReplyDeleteA Punit :
ReplyDeleteThanks for yor intensely emotional blog. I think you can go on to write a novel on it !! :o)
Yes one thing which all of us share in common is that we started with disgust and end with regret .(This calls for a new post.Get ready with the story of how you ended up in the coll.I will post it in a few days). Friends have always been there no matter what. You just couldnt shut your mouth annd sit for a minute as then punit or sumedh or akshat would come to me and say " Bol kya hua, i know something is wrong with you you are not like this". Now i was all fine but just wanted to stay quiet but i wasnt let to do that too!!
Dudes and Dudettes - Iam will miss all of you man!! Stop being senti please...It gets tough for me as a blog author to take so much of input!! :o)
PS :
If the hindi part is your work. I must say. YOU ARE AMAZING
Its wonderful to see long comments on thi blog. THey are equal to the post itself. Never seen this aywhere else.
ReplyDeleteNice. Long way to go
ya long way to go
ReplyDeletebut m glad v united despite our differences
i guess that wat life is all about
Iam happily bloggng away to glory with less than a day left for the exam. Even god will find it difficult to save me this time!!
ReplyDeletehe wont save if u start investing ur time in studies
ReplyDeleteu n i no matter wat hav alwaz studied 18 hours b4 d exam( let the world know it today.
n so god always helped us..... had v alwaz been studying god wud ve left us on r own saying he'l manage i know..... since v dont study tht only he can take us out 4m this storm called exams. so continue not studyin4 d almighty wil ony the bless u:>
talking about the great divide......
ReplyDeletei believe regionalism may have caused it... honestly speaking i dint like people around me talking in kanada..... sumair akshat raaga bakwas kavi divya most of us were 4m outside blore. may that sense of alienism in us surely brought closer initially....
also this great divide was a product of the proximty at which 2 classmates stayed..... coming n goin togethr every day bot people closer......... and when those same friends started stayiin a lil away from each others house i saw a drift among them , m sure if u sit n think about it now ul feel the same....
also the roll nos made a bit of difference n so did the batch of practical.... people of close by roll nos n similar batch chose to sit close to each other...
but most importantly birds of the same feather flock together ...
its not that left side was filled with aunties who could not ve fun or the centre filled with geeks n nerds or the rite with freaks or d bck with mis attitudes........ its just that every one wanted to have fun with their kin of people. n eventually i guess by the end of the second sem people had been divided...
though the gr8 divde was noticble in class i wud lik 2 suggest tht it was almost not there during lab hours...... to quite some extent people went out n around al borders to communicate with each other..
id conclude by sayin that its really tough to maintain something very big under one umbrella n so nature tuk its course in r class to, but here the signifcant part is that despite al odds v stuck together til d vry end...

ReplyDelete@ Punit :
ReplyDeleteHmm, agree with you on the response !!There is nothing called Aunties or nerds or Geeks . These are too strong words to be used. Everyone had fun in their own way. We had it with troubling the teachers and few hadit with asking questions. Its a matter of taste and eveyone hs dfferent attitude
I think one of the first precursor for this divide must have been external attitude towards studies. If you see most of the groups are either good or bad !
Yes also th lab funda is correct.Thats how Abel and Gayathri became buddies!!! :o)
lol chiru!!! nice piece i must say.. very touching... guess you wouldn't hav got the wat the f....!!! stares if u had been more regular.. i guess "the great divide" is each ones perception!!! To me it looked like a small divide!!! just depended on how many ppl one interacted with and the class actually kinda came together during the last semester with all the mass bunks n all....
ReplyDeletestudy divide????? ha ha v have some intelligent ppl among our groups who hav fun and study too .. E.g. Karishma , Bhavya, Shilpa to name a few :) and i don't even think v had a notes divide b'cos somehow our rather 'intelligent frens ' always got it for us :)
I completely agree that labs did bring us closer as a class and that atleast now as our days in college r on their last leg v can say that the great divide has kinda been resolved!! cheers!!!
how come im never mentioned when intelligence is discussed?????????????
ReplyDelete@ Akshath- I so forgot that ur the greatest mastermind present in class.. If not for you many classes of respective teachers.. lol ok namely merin wud have taken up many more of our precious minutes... So thank you Akshath ;) Cheers!
ReplyDelete@Chiru- Pls spell my name correctly :)
made it here at last!!! classic piece o work juuiiicee!!!! commendable!!!
ReplyDeletethis blog jus made me remember the first couple o days o college wen i became famous as the " THE BOWYA " ! N u, without doubt propagated it till it reached great heights!!! cANT THANK U ENOUGH FOR TAT!!!
part o the "back group" that i am (n will always be!) i must say we all interacted with everyone in class!!!
got to know the "left group" well thanks to anirudh a.k.a. bunnydoodh a.k.a. lil lullu 's burning passion for sahana! hahaha the nautanki he did sayin he'l never love anyone else again and that he'l marry only if the girl is sahana and wont if otherwise!!! hahahaha ! quite a hoot!!!
got to shake a leg with the "left group" cuz o u, chinese, akshat and sumedh:)
and well the "middle group" was the apple o our eyes considerin that not a minute o any day {unless we were sleepin or starin elsewhere;)- for example, lil lullu staring at his angel;)} went by without us lookin ahead (cuz the teacher's didn like it if we didn give them the attention they so badly craved for!). i guess they'l neva forget us for the amount we tortured them to "move litlu to the left or litlu to the right"!
"great divide" or not, u cant deny the fun we had as a whole, be it with the Rajnikanth o our college (Hitler), Tomoto Ma'am, " it conseets of" Ma'am, JayZ o our college(vish the rapper), the "cheers to the beers" Ma'am , etc. etc.
N lets not forget the college dog Gopi who took revenge on the security guards, on our behalf, by torturing them to chase him out o the premises for the amount they tortured us herding us like buffaloes!
i know all tat i've said is jus makin u ask for more! so jus take a short trip down memory lane till m back!
ILL BE BACK!!!!
